Drywall Installation Cost Calculator
Estimate the installed cost to hang and finish drywall, by square footage and finish level.

What drives drywall installation cost
Contractors usually price drywall by the square foot of board hung, not by the floor area of the room. A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling has about 530 sq ft of board, even though the floor is only 144 sq ft. Measure walls and ceilings, or use the drywall calculator to get the board area first.
The estimate is board area × installed price per sq ft × finish-level factor. National cost guides from Angi and HomeAdvisor put hung-and-finished drywall at roughly $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft, with most standard jobs near the middle. The default of $2.25 assumes a Level 4 finish, which is what most painted walls in houses get.
The Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard defines finish levels 0 through 5. Levels 1 and 2 are tape-and-bed only, fine for garages or under tile. Level 5 adds a skim coat over the whole surface and takes noticeably more labor, so it is priced here at about 25% over Level 4. Materials (board, screws, tape, compound) usually run a quarter to a third of the installed price; the rest is labor.
Where these numbers come from
The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:
- Gypsum Association GA-214, Recommended Levels of Gypsum Board Finish
- Angi and HomeAdvisor national drywall installation cost guides (2025-2026 ranges of about $1.50-$3.50 per sq ft installed)
These are planning estimates. Check product labels, your local building code, and a licensed contractor before you buy materials or build.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the cost per square foot of drywall higher on small jobs?
Crews have fixed costs for travel, setup, and waiting on each coat of mud to dry, no matter how small the patch. Small jobs and repairs are often billed with a minimum charge or by the day, so the per-square-foot math only really holds for rooms and larger.
Does this estimate include texture and paint?
No. Texture such as knockdown or orange peel and painting are usually separate line items. A Level 3 finish is often chosen specifically because heavy texture will cover it, which is why it prices lower here.
Is hanging drywall myself a big savings?
Hanging is the easier half; finishing is where the skill is. Many homeowners hang the board themselves and hire a finisher for taping and mudding, which can cut labor noticeably while still getting smooth walls.
