A deck or fence is built from many repeating parts, so quantities come from the dimensions and the spacing: boards, joists, posts, rails and hardware. The tools here count the parts, and codes, setbacks and property lines decide what you may build.

Which tool answers which question

  • Deck Calculator: Decking boards, joist count, stain coverage and material cost for your deck.
  • Fence Calculator: Fence length to posts, rails, pickets and sections for wood, vinyl or chain link.
  • Fence Post Depth Calculator: Fence height and frost depth to how deep to set posts, and concrete per hole.

Before you build

Decks over a certain height and attached decks usually need a permit and inspection, and fences have height and location rules. Confirm the property line, check local rules and any homeowners association requirements, and call 811 before you dig post holes or footings.

Posts and footings

Posts are usually set about a third of their length into the ground, deeper where the ground freezes or the soil is soft. Deck footings must sit below the frost line in cold climates and are sized to the load. These tools estimate depth and counts and do not replace the code.

Common mistakes

  • Digging without calling 811. Buried lines are dangerous.
  • Guessing the property line. Confirm it first.
  • Using the wrong fasteners. Treated lumber needs rated hardware.
  • Skipping the permit. Unpermitted decks cause problems at sale.
