Pavers needed

Enter your numbers above.

Divide the patio or walkway's total area by one paver's area to get a raw count, then add a waste percentage to cover cuts at the edges and any breakage — 10% is a reasonable default for a simple rectangular layout.

Pattern matters more than most people expect. A basic grid or running-bond pattern wastes relatively little since most cuts are simple straight cuts along the border. Herringbone, basketweave, and other angled patterns create more partial pavers at every edge and corner, so budget closer to 12-15% waste for those.

This calculator counts full pavers; it doesn't separately size the sand bedding layer or the gravel base beneath it — use the Sand Calculator and Gravel Calculator for those.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra should I order for cuts and breakage?

10% is a solid default for simple grid or running-bond patterns. Herringbone or other angled patterns cut more pavers along every edge and border, so 12-15% is safer there.

Do I need a different base for pavers than for a gravel path?

Yes, pavers need a compacted gravel base plus a leveling sand layer beneath them to stay stable and prevent settling. Use the Gravel and Sand calculators to size those layers separately from this paver count.

Should I round paver count up or down?

Always round up. A leftover partial paver's worth of material still means buying a whole additional paver, and running short mid-install means a delayed second delivery, possibly from a different dye lot.
