How this quiz works

The Siding Finder asks five questions: your climate, your budget, how much upkeep you will do, whether wildfire risk is a concern and the look you want. It scores your answers and points you to vinyl, fiber cement, cedar or wood, engineered wood, metal or brick veneer. Wildfire risk points straight to fiber cement.

Why these questions

Siding protects the house from weather, so climate and fire risk come first. Maintenance and budget then separate the options, from low-cost, low-upkeep vinyl to premium materials such as brick. Your preferred look decides among those that suit the conditions.

What the quiz cannot see

It cannot see the condition of your walls, your local code or the installers nearby. Moisture behind siding is the main cause of failure, and flashing and weather barriers matter as much as the siding. Use the Siding Calculator for quantities.

Before you decide

Look at the product in person, compare warranties and ask about installation requirements, since poor installation voids many warranties. In a house built before 1978 or with old siding, test for lead and asbestos before you remove it. Get several quotes and ask for references.
